In those second part of my look back on our family tree from 10 years ago, we look at our cousins. Of course, we are all related to one degree or another, so anyone reading this will likely be similarly related to my more distant cousins, the only difference is that I have actually managed to trace our relationships.

Cousins

My first cousin four times removed Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia.

My first cousin seventeen times removed Mary Boleyn, mistress of King Henry VIII of England, who featured in Philippa Gregory’s controversial novel, “The Other Boleyn Girl”. In the film adaptations, Mary was played by Natascha McElhone (2003) and Scarlett Johansson (2008), while her sister Anne Boleyn, Henry’s second wife, and mother of Queen Elizabeth of England, was played by Jodie May (2003) and Natalie Portman (2008)

I am, of course, also the first cousin seventeen times removed of Anne Boleyn.

My second cousin four times removed Prince Philippos Andreou of Greece & Denmark, Duke of Edinburgh (left), who went on to become Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

There were rumours that Prince Philip offered to marry my great grandmother (who was his second cousin once removed) but that she refused to even consider the match and eloped with a French naval officer who was wounded while on board French Battleship Strasbourg during surprise British attack on their French allies at Mers-el-Kébir in Tunisia and then killed in action a year later at Bizerte. While the part of the story concerning my great-grandfather is well documented, I cannot confirm the first part. Personally, I have my doubts as Philip seemed intent on marrying the late Queen Elizabeth (who was also his second cousin once removed) from their second meeting in 1939 which took place at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth.

Such wedding rumours were common. Prince Philip’s uncle, Louis Mountbatten was rumoured to wish to marry the Grand Duchess Maria Romanov, elder sister of Anastasia, while more recently the press stated that the then Prince Charles was to become engaged to my great grandmother’s young cousin, Princess Olga Romanova. That would have been an interesting match as she swears like a trooper! 😉

My second cousin nine times removed Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna von Habsburg-Lothringen, Archduchess of Austria. Better known as Marie-Antoinette, Queen of France & Navarre.

My second cousin sixteen times removed Lady Jane Grey, uncrowned Queen of England. According to Edward VI’s “devise for the Succession“, she was to succeed him – Edward’s sisters Mary and Elizabeth had been declared illegitimate by their father, Henry VIII and the other candidates, which included Henry Darnley, whose son would later become King James I of England, were considered to be unsuitable.

Jane Grey was a reluctant queen of England for nine days, until she was deposed in favour of Mary Tudor. Jane was executed on 12th February 1554, along with her husband Guildford Dudley. Guildford’s elder brother Robert went on to become Earl of Leicester and the favourite of Jane’s successor Elizabeth Tudor.

My second cousin 23 times removed Isabella MacDuff, Countess of Buchan, from a fresco at the National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh.

Isabella MacDuff legitimised Robert the Bruce’s kingship by crowning him at Scone. Edward I of England ordered: ”Let her be closely confined in an abode of stone and iron made in the shape of a cross, and let her be hung up out of doors in the open air at Berwick, that both in life and after her death, she may be a spectacle and eternal reproach to travellers.”

My third cousin, twice removed, Ivan Simon Cary Elwes, known as Cary Elwes.

Cary Elwes is an English actor and writer. He is possibly best known for his roles in films such as The Princess Bride (one of my favourite films), Glory, Kiss the Girls, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Days of Thunder, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Hot Shots!, Twister, The Jungle Book, Liar, Liar, and Saw.

My third cousin three times removed, Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith. My third cousin ten times removed, John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, British Prime Minister from 1762 to 1762. He was the first Scot to hold the position, and also the first Tory.

My third cousin thirteen times removed, Louis XIV, King of France & Navarre, the Sun King.

My fourth cousin three times removed Field Marshal Charles Guthrie, Baron Guthrie of Craigiebank.

My fourth cousin, four times removed, Sir William Arbuthnot of Kittybrewster, 2nd Baronet.

He was a great help with my early research into the Guthries, the Arbuthnot family and their relatives.

My fourth cousin six times removed George Gordon Byron, Lord Byron.

Sandy and I were amazed to discover some graffiti by Lord Byron when visiting the château de Chillon on Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

My fourth cousin seven times removed Louis XVI, King of France & Navarre, later King of the French, who was guillotined in 1793.

My fourth cousin nine times removed Prince Charles Edward Louis John Philip Casimir Sylvester Maria Stuart.
