Biography
Margaret Matheson Sutherland Rae’s birth has not been found in the Old Parish Registers. [1]
In the census of 30 March 1851, she is described as being 5 months old, and born in Edinburgh, which would mean she was born around October 1850. [2]
Margaret Matheson Sutherland Rae was the only daughter and fifth of the sixth children of Walter Rae and Janet Elder.
She was named Margaret and Sutherland after her paternal grandmother, Margaret Sutherland. It is not known where the “Matheson” part of her name came from: It is possible that her grandmother’s full name may have been Margaret Matheson Sutherland.
Married three times, firstly to James Campbell, secondly to David Cossar and thirdly to James Scott. [3]
At the census of 31 March 1901, Margaret Rae was described as aged 49 and living at 40 Lower View, Craig Row, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. The head of the household was her husband, James Scott, aged 48 and a maltman. Also in the household were her children, David Cossar, aged 20, iron moulder; George Scott, aged 11, scholar; Robert Scott, aged 9, scholar; and Christina Elder Scott aged 5, scholar. There was also a boarder, Robert Shephill (?), aged 34, a foundry labourer. [4]
At the census of 02 April 1911, Margaret Rae was described as living at 160 Canongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, aged 59, the head of the household, a widow, and a charwoman, general (worker). Also in the household were her half-brother David Cossar, aged 30, a moulder, iron foundry (worker); and her two full brothers, George Scott, aged 21, engineer’s labourer, iron foundry (worker), and Robert Scott, aged 18, hairdresser; Christina Scott, aged 15, a Staff maid at a tea room (worker). There was also a lodger, Elizabeth Moffar, aged 23, paper bag maker, printing (worker).[5]
On 27 April 1888, Margaret Matheson Sutherland Rae married James Scott in Edinburgh. He was her third and final husband, her two previous husbands having predeceased her. The marriage took place at three Saint John Street and was celebrated by By James Macnair, Minister of Canongate church after Banns according to the Forms of the Church of Scotland. The groom was recorded as being aged 34, a bachelor, living at 109 Canongate and working as a Maltman, while the bridge was described as aged 35, a widow, and living at 96 Canongate. The groom’s parents were described as james Scott, Maltman (deceased) and Agness Hogg (deceased). The bride’s parents were described as Robert (see Research Notes) Rae (Labourer) (Iron Foundry (deceased) and Janet Elder (deceased). The witnesses were Alex. Wilson & Janet Tait. Their relationship to the bride and groom is not known and it is presumed that they were friends rather than family. [6]
She was married and widowed three times and died, aged 80, on 13 July 1931 at 23 Albert Street in the Canongate district of the city of Edinburgh in the county of Midlothian in Scotland. The cause was Carcinoma of stomach as certified by J.R. Sinclair MRCS&P. [8]
Research Notes
The description of Margaret’s father as “Robert” appears to be an error as he is described as “Walter” at her two other marriages and at her death, and she was living with Walter and his family in 1851 and 1861. [7]
