Biography
John Craig Old was the fourth child of William Old (born 10 October 1830) and Janet Stratton Craig (born 1830).
He was born on 17 April 1860 at Roslin in Lasswade parish in the county of Midlothian in Scotland. [1]
He had four brothers:

- Martin Sauchie Old (born 02 November 1871)) [5]
and five sisters:
- Janet Old (born 1857) [6]
- Jane Old (born 19 March 1858) [7]
- Agnes Craig Old (born 17 June 1865) [8]
- Mary Finlayson Old (born 08 June 1869) [9] and
- Elizabeth Walsh Old (born 28 January 1874). [10]
When he was 42 years old, his mother Janet Stratton Craig died on 24 May 1902. [11]
When he was 50 years old, his father William Old died on 05 July 1910. [12]
On 02 June 1882, he married Elizabeth Selkirk Kidd (born 1855) in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He was 22 years old when he married Elizabeth Selkirk Kidd, who was 26 years old at that time. [13]
John Craig Old and Elizabeth Selkirk Kidd went on to have ten children:
- Maggie Selkirk Old, who was named after her maternal grandmother, was born on 04 May 1883 at 5 Forbes Street in Edinburgh. [14] She died aged just 11 weeks on 22 July 1883 at the same address after suffering from Whooping cough for 1 month. [15]
- Janet Stratton Craig Old, who was named after her paternal grandmother, was born on 04 May 1884 at 5 Forbes Street in Edinburgh. [16] She went on to marry Walter Ritchie Brotchie [17] and had three children. [18]
- William Old, who was named after his paternal grandfather, was born on 02 January 1886 at 102 Saint Leonards Street in Edinburgh. [19] He went on to marry Jane Alexander [20] and had four children. [21]
- John Craig Old, who was named after his father, was born on 11 February 1888 at 137 Saint Leonards Street in Edinburgh. [22] He went on to marry Jessie Grant McDonald Marr [23] and have seven children. [24]
- Elizabeth Selkirk Kidd Old, who was named after her mother, was born on 03 February 1890 at 137 Saint Leonards Street in Edinburgh. [25] She went on to marry David Hay, [26] but the couple did not have any children.
- Susan Selkirk Kidd Old was named after her mother’s elder sister. She was born on 12 March 1892 at 137 Saint Leonards Street in Edinburgh. [27] She went on to marry George Willard [28] and the couple had one son. [29]
- Allan Old was named after his father’s elder brother. He was born on 12 February 1894 at 137 Saint Leonard’s Street in Edinburgh. [30] He went on to marry Christina Elder Scott [31] and had five children. [32]
- Georgina Selkirk Kidd Old appears to have been named after her maternal grandfather, George Kidd. She was born on 18 February 1896 at 137 Saint Leonard’s Street in Edinburgh. [33] She died aged just 8 on 12 November 1904 at 17 Parkside Street, Saint Leonards, in Edinburgh. The cause of death was Pulmonary tuberculosis and was certified by B.M. Cunningham, M.B. [34]
- Mary Finlayson Old was named after her father’s younger sister. She was born on 26 December 1898 at 137 Saint Leonards Street in Edinburgh. [35] She went on to marry Alexander MacKenzie [36] and have two children. [37]
- Margaret Selkirk Kidd Old was named after her mother’s younger sister. She was born on 15 March 1902 at 17 Parkside Street in Edinburgh. [38] She was married twice, first to Andrew Matheson Liddle, [39] who died after a street accident, [40] and then to Finlay MacDougal Watson, [41] but does not appear to have had any children.

On 31 March 1901, he worked as a Timekeeper. He was 40 years old at that point. [49]
On 15 May 1905, he worked as a Timekeeper. He was 45 years old at that point. [50]
On 30 August 1907, he worked as a Contractor’s Time Keeper. [51]
On 02 April 1911, he worked as a R.S.M. Cleaner (Government) in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He was 50 years old at that point. [52]
On 11 August 1914, he worked as a Contractor’s Time Keeper. [53]
On 28 November 1917, he worked as a Works Time Keeper. [54]
On 03 September 1920, he worked as a Contractor’s Time Keeper. He was 60 old at that time. [55]
On 24 July 1925, he worked as a Time Keeper. [56]
On 29 October 1929, he died at Longmore Hospital in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland when he was 69 years old. He is described as being married to Elizabeth Selkirk Kidd, a Coal Banksman with his usual residence at 5 Lord Russell Place in Edinburgh. His parents were William Old, gunpowder maker (deceased) and Janet Stratton Craig (deceased). The cause of death was Carcinoma of pelvic colon. Secondary carcinoma. as certified by W.R. Dodds Fairbairn M.D. His death was registered on 30 October 1929 in Edinburgh by his son, William Old, of 5 Russell Place in Edinburgh. [57]
His wife Elizabeth Selkirk Kidd died on 30 November 1939, 10 years after him. [58]
