
Biography
Christina Elder Scott was the daughter of James Scott and Margaret Matheson Sutherland Rae.
She was born on 15 April 1895 at 11 Saint John Street in the Canongate district of the city of Edinburgh in the county of Midlothian in Scotland. [1]
She was the third child of James Scott (born 20 October 1853) [2] and youngest of the eight children of Margaret Matheson Sutherland Rae (born October 1850).
She had two full brothers:
- George Pryde Young Scott (born 19 June 1889 in Edinburgh) [3] &
- Robert Rae Scott (born 18 January 1892 in Edinburgh). [4]
She had three elder half-siblings fror her mother’s first marriage to James Campbell:
- Janet (Jessie) Campbell (born 21 March 1871 in Edinburgh) [5]
- Alexander Campbell (born 04 March 1873 and died 03 October 1875). [6] &
- James Campbell (born 02 September 1875 [7] two months after the death of his father on 20 August 1875) [8]
She also had two elder half-siblings for her mother’s second marriage to David Cossar:
- David Cossar (born 03 July 1880) [9] &
- Walter Cossar (born 30 July 1882 [10] and died 05 December 1883). [11]
On 12 January 1911, when Christina Elder Scott was 15 years old, her father James Scott died. [12]
At the census of 31 March 1901, Christina Elder Scott was described as aged 5, a scholar, and living at 40 Lower View, Craig Row, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. The head of the household was her father, James Scott, aged 48 and a maltman. Also in the household were her mother, Margaret Scott, aged 49; her half-brother, David Cossar, aged 20, iron moulder; and her two full brothers, George Scott, aged 11, scholar; and Robert Scott, aged 9, scholar. There was also a boarder, Robert Shephill (?), aged 34, a foundry labourer. [13]
At the census of 02 April 1911, Christina Elder Scott was described as aged 15, a Staff maid at a tea room (worker) and living at 160 Canongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. The head of the household was her mother, Margaret Scott, aged 59, widow, a charwoman, general (worker). Also in the household were her half-brother David Cossar, aged 30, a moulder, iron foundry (worker); and her two full brothers, George Scott, aged 21, engineer’s labourer, iron foundry (worker), and Robert Scott, aged 18, hairdresser. There was also a lodger, Elizabeth Moffar, aged 23, paper bag maker, printing (worker).[14]
On 03 September 1920, Christina Elder Scott married Allan Old (born 12 February 1894) [15] at 5 Greyfriars Place in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. The marriage was celebrated by Declaration in the presence of Robert Rae Scott, hairdresser (the bride’s elder brother) and Mary Old, stationer’s assistant (the groom’s younger sister). The groom was described as being aged 26, and living at 8 Lord Russell Place in Edinburgh, while the bride was described as being aged 25, a hotel waitress, and living at 23 Albert Street in Edinburgh. The groom’s parents were described as John C. Old, timekeeper and Elizabeth Selkirk Kidd. The bride’s parents were described as James Scott, foundry labourer (deceased) and Margaret Matheson Sutherland Campbell, subsequently Cossar, now Scott, Ms Rae. The marriage was celebrated by Warrant of Sheriff substitute of the Lothians and Peebles dated 3rd September 1920. [16]
Christina Elder Scott had five children with Allan Old. [17]
On 13 July 1931, when Christina Elder Scott was 36 years old, her mother Margaret Matheson Sutherland Rae died. [18]
On 04 January 1962, Christina Elder Scott died at 2 Redbraes Place in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. She was described as aged 66 and married to Allan Old (baker) retired. Her parents were recorded as James Scott, brewery maltman (deceased) and Margaret Mathison Sutherland Scott, previously Cossar, formerly Campbell, Ms Rae (deceased). The cause of death was Carcinoma of biliary tract with metastarcs in lung as certified by by H. I. Lahouri, M.B. Ch.B. The death was registered on 04 January 1962 at Edinburgh by her son, Allan Old, of 24 Balmoral Place in Edinburgh. [19]

She was cremated on 06 January 1962 at Warriston Crematorium, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. [20]
Her husband Allan Old died on 30 May 1967, 5 years after her. [21]
