Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise – “To Boldly Go Where No Kirk Has Gone Before.”

“Ambition leads me … farther than any other man has been before me.”

One Kirk that we have been unable to connect to is, Captain James Tiberius Kirk, and for good reason, as he is a fictional character in the Star Trek media franchise. Originally played by actor William Shatner, Kirk first appeared in Star Trek: The Original Series serving aboard the starship USS Enterprise as captain. Kirk leads his crew as they explore new worlds, new civilizations, and “boldly go where no man has gone before“. Often, the characters of Spock and Leonard McCoy act as his logical and emotional sounding boards, respectively. Captain Kirk has been portrayed in numerous films, books, comics, webisodes, and video games.

Kirk first appears in Star Trek’s second pilot “Where No Man Has Gone Before” and the first episode, “The Man Trap“, which was broadcast on 8 September 1966. Shatner continued in the role for the show’s three seasons, and later provided the voice of the animated version of Kirk in Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973–1974). Shatner returned to the role for Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) and in six subsequent films. Actor Chris Pine portrays an alternative young version of the character in the 2009 Star Trek film. Pine reprised his role in Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and in Star Trek Beyond (2016). Other actors have played the character in fan-created media, and the character has been the subject of multiple spoofs and satires.

The ancestry of James Tiberius Kirk

The (fictional) Kirk family ancestry included settlers who pioneered the American frontier in the 19th century, and the Kirks of the early 23rd century rediscovered the impulse for untamed spaces. After his early childhood on EarthJames T. Kirk the son of George Samuel Kirk, Sr. and Winona Kirk was living on Tarsus IV by the age of 13, his brother’s family later lived on colonies as well. (TOS episodes: “Spectre of the Gun“, “The Conscience of the King“, “Operation — Annihilate!“)

George and Winona’s other son George Samuel Kirk, Jr. (called “Sam” only by his brother) was a researcher, hoping to transfer to the Earth Colony 2 research station in 2265. Sam, along with his wife Aurelan and three sons, joined his younger brother for a farewell visit before the USS Enterprise departed for her five-year mission. It was the last time Jim saw Sam alive. Sam ended up on Deneva, with his wife and son Peter by 2267. The neural parasites invaded Deneva that year and killed the couple, but Peter survived the attack. (TOS  novelEnterprise: The First AdventureTOS episodes: “What Are Little Girls Made Of?“, “Operation — Annihilate!“)

Jim Kirk recognized the impact his life in Starfleet had on his family life. In 2287, while camping with his friends in Yosemite National Park, he referred to himself, Spock, and McCoy, as the only family that men like themselves were likely to have. (TOS movieThe Final Frontier)
