Edinburgh Artillery Militia Sergeant

Another photo of our great grandfather James Scott, who was born at Penston in Gladsmuir parish on 20 October 1853 and participated in the Egyptian campaign of 1882-3 and the Nile Expedition (Gordon Relief Expedition) of 1884-5.

He is wearing the uniform of a sergeant in the Edinburgh Artillery Militia.

The accompanying photos show the detail above his sergeant’s stripes, while his uniform can be compared to the EAM gunner’s uniform from 1866.

Edinburgh Artillery Militia uniforms

The 1st Edinburgh (City) Artillery Volunteer Corps was raised in Edinburgh on 4th November 1859 in response to a French invasion scare and by October 1860 it was composed of nine batteries.

On 1 April 1882, the unit was incorporated into the Scottish Division of the Royal Artillery (RA) and in 1899 they became the 1st Edinburgh (City) Royal Garrison Artillery (Volunteers) before becoming part of the new Territorial Force in 1908 as the Lowland (City of Edinburgh) Heavy Battery, RGA, based at McDonald Road, in Edinburgh.
